Burlap and Butterflies

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Memorial Day - Memorial Day Weekend 2012

I hope you have a nice relaxing day ahead of you. Kevin and I plan on prepping the nursery for some painting, and we hope to squeeze in some grilling!

I feel like summer is here in full swing.  It was almost 100 degrees in Chicagoland yesterday; wow, it was hot!  The heat motivated me to do something crafty indoors.  I have been wanting to make a (well first springy, but that never happened) summery wreath for our front door.  I figured I could make use of some left over burlap I had kicking around.  With my master plan in mind I picked up some bright butterflies and a straw wreath.

 summer wreath

The first thing I did was cut out strips of burlap. They were about 3” wide and the length of the bolt of burlap (It was about 45” I think).  I ended up needing about 7 of them.  So roughly 2/3 yard (this is an estimate).

After I had my pile, I hot glued them all on keeping all the seems in the back, and giving them a haircut as needed. Winking smile

Finally I was left with this simple burlap covered wreath.

The backs of the butterflies had long wires, so I trimmed those down to about 1”…

With the bit of wire left I was able to poke them into the wreath and test out their placement without gluing them.

 Going to the right…

Going to the left (which I liked best and hot glued them in place)…

Finally, the finished product (after adding a wire loop to the back):

I hope you had a nice long weekend!  Did you do anything special?  Parades and BBQs?  DIY and crafting?
